Over the years that I have been in Ainslie the characteristics that make it a unique place in the world have become apparent. Its open spaces and cottages give it a poetic air and nowhere in the world is quite like it. The Old Rutherford Crescent preschool building has a history that is very much part of Canberra's early beginnings. It provided a place for children to attend preschool when childcare didn't exist in Canberra. It was a community hub for many events that were significant in the story of Canberra's multicultural idenity. It provided a home away from home space allowing mothers and their children a small amount of independence each week. This quiet and unassuming space represents the kind of thoughtful design which makes Ainslie so charming.
